Chapter 12 – Cole

“It’s a long, dark, haunted road I’ve traveled. You don’t deserve to get lost on it.”

“What if I don’t care about dark and haunted roads? What if I’ve lived on the same one you have, Cole?” Her breath hitched in her throat as tears were quickly blinked back. “What if we could travel it together and help one another?”

With those words I saw the young woman who stood before me clearly for the first time. I really and truly saw Briar Lovell for the gorgeous, sexy, brilliant, and undeniably sweet caregiver that dared to forgive a grumpy, reckless wolf like me. She deserved every praise and bit of kindness I could bestow upon her and I swore I’d make it my personal mission from this point forward to treat her with respect.

Something happened when I found her in that cave. Holding her dying body in my arms, I was desperate to save her but with that feeling came the realization that I’d been holding back. Some small part of her touched my damaged soul. My heart had latched onto hers and my wolf was totally and completely set on mating her as soon as possible.

This left me at odds with my lifelong companion. He wasn’t letting Briar go and he insisted I claim her in front of the pack. Howling and whining, he scratched at my composure all day long until I knew I not only had to stake my ownership but needed to make restitution with my family. I abandoned my pack as much as they abandoned me, but I was ready to resume my fulltime role as beta and I intended to make that clear to everyone . . . including Dane Valko.

Before I started a shitstorm of activity, I had one important task to complete.

The cemetery was quiet as I walked up the hill, passing between the graves to the one where Renleigh was buried. All of the wolf packs of Cedar Creek were buried here. We didn’t use public graveyards and kept our kind together to avoid any kind of problems. Humans were unaware of our existence and had been for centuries. No point in pushing our luck now. Deep in the forest of Cedar Creek Valley we didn’t get many human visitors. They stuck to the edges and camped, fished, hiked, and planned their recreational activities hundreds of miles from where we made our home.

The bears were the exception. Their hunting lodge catered to humans and I was pretty sure they got a kick out of being shifters hidden right before their ignorant eyes.

Holding flowers in my hand, I kneeled at Renleigh’s grave. The bright colors of the blooms were a stark contrast to the cold gray headstone. Three years had lapsed, and this was the first time I considered her body buried in the ground. Her ghost had haunted me for so long that I knew I had to let Renleigh go. It was time.

My chest ached as I placed the bouquet and lowered it, my hand dropping at my side.
